Springsteen Calls for Bush's Impeachment
Aging rocker Bruce Springsteen added a little political spice to his
Washington, D.C., concert at FedEx Field Saturday night when, according to
concertgoer accounts, he called for President Bush's impeachment.
"It's time to impeach the president and get a man in there to get us out of
this mess," the Boss allegedly roared, according to FreeRepublic.com's
Kristinn Taylor, co-leader of the group's D.C. chapter.
Another concertgoer told an online Springsteen discussion group that Bruce
"got a little political, which I thought was great, but he definitely
seemed to lose a bit of the crowd around me when he suggested we impeach
Bush."
Others thought the Boss was merely joking, since he suggested that Bush be
replaced by fellow E Street bandmember Clarence Clemons. But Springsteen
reportedly followed his impeachment exhortation with complaints about past
and present elected leaders who have misled the country.
During a Boston performance this past Wednesday, Springsteen prefaced his
rendition of "Born in the U.S.A." with a statement he termed "a public
service announcement" about holding our political leaders accountable.
According to the Boston Herald, he closed the show by plugging Al Franken's
latest Republican-bashing book.
Last April, Springsteen defended the Dixie Chicks after lead singer Natalie
Maines said she was ashamed that President Bush was from her home state of
Texas.
"To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by
using their American right to free speech," the Boss insisted on his Web
site.

It's funny how the "lessons" learned in Vietnam are being distorted and
abused to attempt to silence vocal and active opposition to the Iraq War as
well as any criticism of the Bush administration.
As a side note: I find it funny and ironic that republicans and
conservatives didn't seem to have a problem replacing a Democrat president
with a Republican president during the Vietnam War. And yet today, democrat
candidates discussing the failures of George Bush are accused of Bush
bashing just for political gain. It's somehow bad form because of the war
on terrorism and the war in Iraq. Yet replacing a democrat with a
republican during the Vietnam war was perfectly fine? Please.
The terrible way our troops were treated during that era is being misused
today as an excuse to muzzle any sort of dissent against the
administration's policies. If you didn't want the war, then the extreme
guilt held over from Vietnam forces you to support the troops. Nobody wants
a repeat of the treatment of our soldiers from that era. But that certainly
does not give Bush and conservatives carte blanche to lump themselves in
with that crowd! Just because somebody doesn't want our troops to die, does
not mean that they must also absolutely agree with Bush on every foreign
and domestic policy. They are mutually exclusive.
And 9/11 and Bush's War on Iraq are certainly not excuses to attempt to
curb opposition to anything and everything they say or do; opposing
viewpoints are not traitorous, but rather the healthy product of a
civilized and free democracy. I would be more worried that America was
crumbling if there wasn't anybody speaking out; that would mean that fear
of our government had overtaken us and our Constitution had been
effectively disemboweled. Since we do live in a free society, the next best
thing to forcefully silencing dissent is to attempt to label the opposition
anti-American or traitorous. But it's the same logic that the religious
right uses about gays- "Condemn the sin, love the sinner." A mother can
simultaneously love her child and still scold him for pulling the cat's
tail again; she doesn't have to support his tail-pulling policy! Likewise,
I can support the troops but not the actions of the president. The logic is
pretty straight forward.
I don't remember liberals calling those conservatives who opposed Clinton's
war in Kosovo traitors for speaking out against him and the war. Nobody
called out Trent Lott or Hannity in 98' and called them traitors for their
dissent. Nobody said, "Uh, your constant daily harping and talking down of
the military on national T.V., claiming we are ill-prepared, don't have
enough bullets, that we'll lose the war, is endangering the lives of our
soldiers and emboldening the efforts of our enemies." And if they did,
there certainly wasn't much press about it. And these guys were claiming
things like the war was a ruse to distract us from Monica Lewinsky, that we
were losing the conflict, that Clinton could not win it; total and utter
pessimism. But somehow it's only endangering the lives of our soldiers and
feeding the strength of the enemy if liberals are doing it. What short
memories many of these people have, who can't recall a war 5 years ago and
how they responded, calling it a ruse to distract from Monica! That really
must have empowered Milosevic, since he eventually triumphed, took so many
U.S. soldiers' lives and is so powerful today. (Sarcasm Alert) The point is
that vocal dissent in the U.S. does NOT foster danger for the troops or
strengthen the enemy- if so, the war in Kosovo would have been a disaster
due to the skepticism, criticism, and opposition felt by Clinton from
conservatives. Instead, the war was a triumph, Milosevic was removed and is
on trial, the genocide was halted, and NOT ONE U.S. troop was killed in the
process. (That is right, isn't it?) Now that kind of success is
breathtaking when compared to Iraq! And performed under the critical eye of
conservative dissenters opposing Clinton the whole way, putting our soldier
in "danger", and empowering the enemy. Those traitors! (Note for
reactionaries: I don't really think they're traitors)
Theodore Roosevelt was vehemently and vocally opposed to Woodrow Wilson and
his policies in the Great War, and made it known publically and regularly.
He stated that the most patriotic thing an American citizen could do was
speak their mind during a war, especially if it was in opposition to it. ____________________ "A New Brain For

Very good points here. I'm surprised the ABB liberal bashers haven't
tainted this thread with their wrath yet. It can get pretty heated over
there. lol
I enjoy debating with them, though. Makes me think about what and why I
feel so passionately regarding the issues facing world's citizens, and our
future. You can ask anybody there, I'm the one who cheers for the
underdogs in society, a peace-monger and have even been called socialist by
some over there. :-) ____________________ "Yeah, the world would swing if I were king...."

Tommy, hope you read this, you'll maybe laugh, or get a little pleasure of
this.....
First I am some weird hybrid of redneck, right wing, hippie, left wing, and
mostly middle of the road, a walking political contradiction.
Way back when, back when Iraq was very fresh still, many people had
disagreements over Bush, Iraq, war, etc..... Tommy and I were mildly
caught up in that too, I wish that could be redone, but he is a gentleman
and we still love each other...
MY POINT:
TOMMY! I was wrong! In light of all where the Iraq situation is now, and
all that is known, this is a public admission that we fumbled, fouled,
botched, and misdirected a lot of people, lives, money and effort. We
meant well, but it was wrong in many ways, Saddam was evil and killed many,
but we got the world to hate us more and should have put all that energy in
other directions...... That hindsight stuff is priceless, ya know? ____________________ One in fifty people in the USA have Hep C, the "Silent Killer". Four
